Alternative investments is not a new concept but seems to be gaining momentum, I did a story in back in 2012 under the CDSDEFAULT-1-1heading ART TREATED AS AN ALTERNATIVE INVESTMENT .Would like to evolve on those terms, Let’s face it : The financial crisis & the European crisis that seemed to mark a turning point in the spectacular growth of alternative investments, such as managed investments in hedge funds, private equity, real estate, commodities, and infrastructure. Poor performance and liquidity problems led to massive redemption in several categories. By now, however, those problems have subsided, and alternatives are back on track.

What is a Hedge fund

Hedge fund is a type of private and unregistered investment-pool that employs sophisticated hedging and arbitrage techniques in blogboth domestic and international markets to generate high returns.

Traditionally Hedge funds have been limited to sophisticated, wealthy investors because they required a large initial investment.

Earlier most of the hedge funds strategies such as leverage, long, short and derivative positions were focused on corporate equity markets. But now hedge funds new focus areas are commodities and money markets.

It would be futile comparing Warren Buffet  and George Soros  wealth disparity. They’re both wealthy and successful. Two different styles; 813530equally effective.

If you’re not familiar with Veryan Allen , he writes these insanely awesome rants about how the passive indexing cult is clueless and real alpha is out there for real managers to capture. I love reading his stuff, even when I disagree with some of it.

He’s just tweeted a link to a classic post on his aptly and spartanly titled “Hedge Fund” blog, in which we learn about how Warren Buffett is essentially the lead hedge fund manager in the universe even though he runs, for all intents and purposes, a no-fee actively managed closed-end fund.

I especially liked this part, where he explains why Warren Buffett has become wealthier than George Soros (not that it matters at that level), despite Soros’s better performance… Continue reading

YanLu, David K. Musto and Sugata ray published a paper under the heading “Alternative Marketing for Alternative imagesInvestments” . Hedge funds are currently banned from advertising. New legislation contemplates lifting this ban, thus raising the question of whether the ban is good policy. The Paper address this question by analyzing a form of indirect hedge fund advertising that already exists: advertising by institutions running both hedge funds and mutual funds, where the ads promote either the overall institution or specific mutual fund products. The Paper find that institutions increase such advertising after hedge fund flows sag, and that such advertising predicts subsequent increased inflows for hedge funds. Continue reading
